At the center, the black-and-white silhouette, shirt and tie, strikes the pose of a classic portrait, but two bold red bands cut across the face and break any sense of restraint. Around it, John Beckley builds a saturated urban panel setting: vertical traces, red splashes, fragments of text and pasted banknotes give the impression of a wall scratched by time. The hanging bulb, the tilted photograph and the inscription « 104 Maastricht Street » anchor the scene in a street aesthetic, between torn poster and collage. The dark drips sliding over the figure and the background reinforce this feeling of tension, as if the image were overflowing beyond its own frame.
