Set up Stripe Connect to receive payments
To sell on Khroma, you need to connect a Stripe account. Stripe handles the buyer's payment and pays out to your bank account. Khroma is not an intermediary on the money flow: funds move directly through your Stripe account.
This article covers the connection, the possible statuses, and how commissions work.
Why Stripe?
Stripe is a payment processor specialised in marketplaces. Khroma uses its Stripe Connect product in Express mode, which combines two things:
- The buyer pays by card (or another method enabled on your account). The payment is secured by Stripe, which handles 3D Secure and banking compliance.
- The funds land directly on your Stripe account, then are paid out to your bank on a schedule you choose (daily by default).
Khroma deducts its commission at the moment of payment. You receive the net amount.
Where to find it
Dashboard → Shop → Settings, section Payments.
Until you connect Stripe, the block reads: Connect your Stripe account to receive payments directly to your bank account. A Connect Stripe button starts the procedure.
Start onboarding
Click Connect Stripe. Khroma redirects you to a secure Stripe URL, with a transient Redirecting to Stripe… loader. You land on the onboarding form hosted by Stripe.
Stripe asks you successively:
- Your details: first name, last name, date of birth, nationality.
- Your business address: your professional address (can be your home for a sole trader).
- Your activity type: individual or company. Pick the status that matches your real tax filing.
- Your bank details: IBAN/account number where Stripe will pay out.
- Proof of identity: front/back photo or file upload. Stripe verifies identity for anti-money-laundering compliance.
Plan 5 to 15 minutes, depending on whether you have your documents handy. If you abandon mid-flow, Stripe saves your progress: you'll resume where you left off by relaunching from the Khroma dashboard.
At the end, Stripe redirects you back to your Khroma dashboard. A toast confirms: Successfully connected to Stripe!
Possible statuses
Once the connection is engaged, Stripe assigns a state to your account. Khroma displays this state in the Payments section.
Connected and operational
Your payments are configured: Stripe connected. Buyers can pay by card. An Access my Stripe account button opens your full Stripe dashboard.
You can collect payments. No action required on your side.
Verification in progress
Stripe sometimes needs hours (rarely days) to validate your file. During that time:
- Toast: Stripe verification in progress. You'll be able to sell once validated.
- Your listings stay publishable, but the buy button is not yet active for buyers.
Stripe notifies you by email when the account is validated. The status flips to Connected automatically.
Onboarding incomplete
If you exited the procedure before the end:
- Toast: Onboarding in progress — click to resume verification.
- The button in the Payments section becomes Resume verification.
Click the button to finish.
Connection error
If the connection fails (network issue, Stripe rejection):
- Toast: Error while connecting to Stripe. Please try again.
- No data is saved on the Khroma side.
Try again. If the problem persists, contact support detailing the exact step where the error occurs.
Session expired
Stripe limits the validity duration of its onboarding URLs. If the window stayed open too long:
- Toast: Session expired. Click again to resume.
- Click Connect Stripe or Resume verification again to generate a new URL.
Fees and commissions
Three financial flows come into play on a sale.
Stripe fees
Stripe charges its own fee on each transaction. For a European card in euros, the standard rate is 1.4% + €0.25. For a non-European card, the rate is higher (around 2.9% + €0.25).
These fees are taken directly by Stripe from the captured amount.
Khroma commission
Khroma charges a 5% commission on each sale. This rate is uniform for all artists, regardless of your plan.
The commission is taken automatically at payment time and appears as a dedicated line in each order's financial breakdown, available from Dashboard → Shop → Orders → {number}.
Effective calculation on a sale
For a piece sold at €1,000 (incl. VAT) to a French buyer:
- The buyer pays €1,000.
- Stripe takes 1.4% + €0.25 = €14.25.
- Khroma takes a 5% commission, i.e. €50.
- You receive the remainder.
The exact split (net, VAT, shipping, commission, net payout) is detailed on each order's screen.
Payouts to your bank
Stripe pays out your balance to your bank account on a regular schedule. The default is daily, with about a 7-day delay for the first payout (Stripe collects enough data on your activity first).
You can change the frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, manual) from your Stripe dashboard via Access my Stripe account.
Accepted payment methods
Stripe Payment Element dynamically displays the methods enabled on your Stripe account that are compatible with the buyer's country. By default:
- Bank cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express depending on activation).
- Wallets where available (Apple Pay, Google Pay).
- Bank transfer in certain regions.
To add or remove a payment method, open your Stripe dashboard and go to Settings → Payment methods.
3D Secure and security
Stripe automatically applies the Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) required by European regulation. Concretely, the buyer may be redirected to their banking app or to a 3D Secure confirmation page to validate the payment. This adds a step for the buyer but protects both parties against fraud.
Khroma never stores the buyer's card data. Stripe encrypts and keeps it on its PCI-DSS-certified infrastructure.
The invoice issued to the buyer is created on your Stripe Connect account, in your name (your business name, your address, your VAT number). Khroma acts as a technical platform; the sale stays legally between you and the buyer.
Disconnect Stripe
You can revoke the Stripe connection from your Stripe dashboard (Stripe-side), not directly from Khroma. If you disconnect:
- Your listings can no longer be purchased (the buy button is disabled).
- Orders in flight follow their normal cycle through delivery.
- You can reconnect any time.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Stripe verification take?
From a few minutes to 48 hours in the vast majority of cases. If Stripe asks for additional documents (for example a proof of address), expect longer. You receive an email at each step.
Can I use the same Stripe account for my business and my Khroma activity?
Stripe Connect creates a Khroma-specific account. If you already have a Stripe account for another activity, your Khroma account will be separate. This avoids accounting confusion.
Do my buyers see that I'm using Stripe?
At checkout, yes: the Secure payment by Stripe note is displayed. The issued invoice carries your name and details, not Stripe's — except for a discreet note identifying the payment processor.
What's the exact Khroma commission?
Khroma charges a flat 5% commission on each sale, the same for all artists. This rate is uniform and does not depend on your plan. It is taken automatically at payment time and appears as a dedicated line on each order.
What happens if a buyer disputes a payment (chargeback)?
Stripe notifies you immediately. You usually have a few days to provide proof of delivery (tracking number, signature, email exchanges with the buyer). If you lose the dispute, the amount is debited from your Stripe balance. See Manage your orders for the detail of refund and dispute situations.
Can I disable Stripe without closing my shop?
Yes — you can switch to My Works mode (portfolio without sales) from Dashboard → My site → Settings. Your listings stay visible, but without a buy button. Stripe can be disconnected or kept on standby.
